Michael S. Chester, President, International Manufacturing Consultants, has founded and built companies, set up manufacturing operations, formed strategic partnerships, set up global joint ventures, raised over $40M for startups which he co-founded, including two based in China, and commercialized technologies.
He spent 16 years with IBM designing robots and automation, marketing and selling IBM products to manufacturing companies, setting up global operations and supply chains, and founding an IBM consulting organization for global manufacturing clients which he grew into a $20M business.
Prior to joining IBM, Mike designed nuclear plant inspection robots and chemical monitoring systems for Combustion Engineering.

Mike’s clients range from startups to Fortune 500 companies in the manufacturing, process software, clean tech, and biotech industries and have operations worldwide, especially in the US, Europe, and China.
Mike is a mentor to companies competing in the Clean Tech Open (formerly the Ignite Clean Energy Competition), including those which placed 3rd in 2009 and 2nd in 2008, and is a judge for the Massachusetts Challenge business plan competition.
China Connection
Mike has been advising companies on China operations since he lived in China from 1986-87 while consulting to factories owned by the Machine Building Ministry and teaching graduate courses in business at Hunan University.
Two of the startups which Mike co-founded are based in China and received funding and support from the Chinese government. One provides mobile banking services in China. The other, BioHermes, a cell biology company, was sold in 2010. He was also VP Business Development for Tonbu which developed web-based collaborative environments for global electronics companies.

Mike earned his BS in Electrical Engineering and MS in Computer Engineering from Syracuse University and his MBA from Union College. He is past Chair of the IEEE Boston Entrepreneurs’ Network, www.boston-enet.org, has served on the board of APICS Boston, and was a member of the planning committee of the MIT Enterprise Forum for over 10 years. His certifications include APICS CPIM and CIRM, and Operational Excellence by the Supplier Excellence Alliance (SEA) for Aerospace companies. Mike is a frequent speaker at conferences on Global Entrepreneurship, Supply Chains, Manufacturing, and China business. Mike and his sons have competed on the TV show Robot Wars with their robotic rabbit, “Bunny Attack”.
